Annual Fundraising Event to Begin FIGHT CENSORSHIP, READ COMICS! Initiative, Featuring New Works by Maia Kobabe, Matt Kindt, and Gabriel B\u00e1 & F\u00e1bio Moon<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In partnership with the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund<\/strong> (CBLDF), Oni Press<\/strong> \u2013 the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning comic book publisher \u2013 is proud to announce its sponsorship of this year’s annual CBLDF Welcome Party & Art Auction<\/strong> on Thursday, July 20th<\/strong> at The Westgate Hotel<\/strong> in San Diego, CA<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In tandem with the annual fundraising event that draws hundreds of comics industry creators, publishers, educators, and advocates each year, Oni Press<\/strong> will be using the occasion to debut a new initiative in support of the CBLDF <\/strong>entitled FIGHT CENSORSHIP, READ COMICS!<\/strong> and unveil several new pieces of artwork commissioned specifically for the new initiative from an array of prominent artists and featuring the graphic design of award-winning, London-based designer Tom Muller<\/strong> (House of X<\/em>), including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Free for CBLDF members and the general public with a suggested voluntary donation at the door to support the CBLDF\u2019s ongoing work in supporting the cause of free speech and creative expression, the annual party will be hosted at\u00a0The Westgate Hotel<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Terrace Under the Stars<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a08 pm to 12 midnight PT<\/strong>. (An SDCC badge is\u00a0NOT\u00a0required to attend.) On behalf of\u00a0Oni Press<\/strong>, the first 50 attendees will receive a free\u00a0“Secret Edition”<\/strong>\u00a0variant cover of the latest issue of the publisher’s science-fiction anthology,\u00a0XINO #2<\/strong>, featuring artwork by rising star\u00a0Nick Cagnetti<\/strong>\u00a0(Pink Lemonade<\/em>); while the first 200 will receive a free\u00a0FIGHT CENSORSHIP, READ COMICS!<\/strong>\u00a0two-piece button set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evening’s festivities will also feature the return of the CBLDF’s annual San Diego Comic-Con Silent Art Auction<\/strong>, featuring comic art and other collectibles donated by a wide array of supporting contributors from the worlds of comics, video games, and entertainment: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

High-quality, 11×17″ prints of Kobabe’s FIGHT CENSORSHIP, READ COMICS!<\/strong> illustration will also be available at the Oni booth (#1829) <\/strong>through the week with a portion of all proceeds benefiting the CBLDF<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maia Kobabe’s award-winning graphic memoir, Gender Queer<\/em><\/strong>, has been placed at the epicenter of many of these challenges at the state and local level and was previously the subject of a Virginia obscenity lawsuit, which was successfully defended by the CBLDF<\/strong> and ruled to be unconstitutional in 2022. Oni Press<\/strong> is proud to reciprocate the CBLDF<\/strong>‘s support at this critical time in the history of free speech for the comics medium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
